Campervan and RV Rental in Leipzig

If you're planning a road trip in the historic Saxony Region of Germany, Leipzig is a fantastic place to start. Rent a campervan or RV in this historic capital, then tour one of Germany's most fascinating regions.

Situated at the confluence of several rivers and the junction of two Roman Roads, Leipzig is famous for its beautiful market square, exquisite architecture, fascinating museums, a university dating back to the 15th century, and green outdoor campervan destinations.

Once you have arranged your campervan rental in Leipzig, it's time to head onto the open road to see what Saxony's countryside and villages offer.

National Parks Around Leipzig

Northeast of Leipzig is the Düben Heath Nature Reserve , a low-lying region of forested trails, pristine lakes, and quaint villages. Highlights include the 15th-century mill at Bad Dueben and Bad Schmiedeberg, a picturesque spa town easily reachable by campervan or RV rental.

Suppose your reason for renting a campervan or an RV in Leipzig is to seek amazing medieval churches and castles, villages, and vineyards. In that case, Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park, a little over 100km west of Leipzig, is well worth a visit. From the stunning medieval Naumburg Cathedral to the plentiful vineyards (Pinots, Rieslings, and Müller-Thurgau varieties a specialty), the park has loads to explore.

Naturpark Thüringer Schiefergebirge/Obere Saale is one of the best regions to get out your bicycle and hit the trails surrounded by nature. Naturpark Thüringer Schiefergebirge - Obere Saale is a mountainous park with many lakes and stunning views you’ll be able to witness from your campervan.

To the east of Leipzig and not far north of Dresden lies Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft Nature Park, a region of purple-heathered moorland, meadows, and orchards. It's a quiet and peaceful place to get away from the buzz of the city and enjoy your campervan or RV road trip.

Leipzig Lakes and Rivers

As well as the above nature reserves and their lakes, there are several notable waterways to discover while on your campervan or RV rental adventure from Leipzig.

The river Pleiße runs north from Ebersbrunn, ending in Leipzig, with many navigable stretches and walkways along its length. At Leipzig, it meets the White Elster river and the Parthe, and they eventually flow into the Saale at Halle to the northwest.

Whether it's a Leipzig Riverside Forest Tour on the Pleiße or kayaking from the city to Cospudener See, there are plenty of aquatic adventures in the region. You can enjoy white water rafting in a purpose-built center in Leipzig or head with your campervan or RV rental near the Polish border, where you can take a rafting tour on the wild Neisse River all the way to Rothenburg. On the way, make sure you stop at the historic city of Dresden.

The Leipzig Riverside Forest, just to the northwest of the city center, lets you discover all three waterways in one glorious park. The area is perfect for walking, running, or cycling.

Some of the best swimming spots can be found on the small lakes ("sees" in German) near Leipzig, including Cospudener See, Kulkwitzer See, and Wallendorfer See, which even features a sandy beach.

Campgrounds Around the Leipzig Area

Below is a sampling of the best RV and campervan sites in the region, all of which have electrical hookups, bathrooms, and drinking water facilities.

Camping Kleinliebenau is situated on a pretty lake on the edge of the Kiesgruben Wallendorf/Schladebach nature reserve, just 20 km west of the city center.

If you'd like to be in the heart of the forest, the Heide-Camp Schlaitz offers quiet, lakeside heaven amongst the silver birches trees of the Düben Heath Nature Reserve.

For those who prefer a few more onsite activities, the Camping and Leisure Center Schaepmann in the south of the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park at Bad Bibra has not one but two swimming pools! It's only open to rented campervans between April and October.

Finally, amid a cluster of lakes in the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft Nature Park, you'll find the Campingpark Grünewalder Lauch, which has lake bathing and an attractive beer garden in which to sample some of the best local brews.
